Red Sox starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after he undergoes elbow surgery on Thursday.

Red Sox pitcher Nathan Eovaldi will have elbow surgery Thursday and will be out of action for 4-6 weeks, a source confirmed to ESPN.

The Athletic first reported that Eovaldi would have surgery.

The Red Sox placed Eovaldi on the injured list Saturday because of a loose body in his right (throwing) elbow. Red Sox president Dave Dombrowski said then there was a chance the loose body, described as cartilage, was there when Eovaldi underwent surgery while with the Tampa Bay Rays in March 2018 and missed two months.

The defending champs put aside their dismal start — and the building panic of their fans — with three straight wins at first-place Tampa Bay.

Christian Vazquez hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th inning and the Boston Red Sox completed an uplifting three-game sweep of the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays with a 4-3 victory Sunday.

Finally, some momentum for the Red Sox: They beat the Rays 4-3 in 11 innings to sweep three games from the Rays to win their first series of 2019. Let’s just say there’s a big difference between being 5 games back or 11 games back. And now they return to Fenway for an 11-game homestand.

Matt Barnes had been dominant so far this season, striking out more than half the batters he’d faced, but Tommy Pham just took a hanging curveball out to right-center, just sneaking it over the railing to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth. The Red Sox are going for the series sweep.

Nathan Eovaldi, who has a 6.00 ERA in his four starts this season for the Red Sox, will have his right elbow evaluated by a doctor before making a decision on surgery, which could keep him out two months.

The Red Sox placed right-hander Nathan Eovaldi (0-0, 6.00 ERA in four starts) on the 10-day injured list with a loose body in the right elbow, retroactive to April 18.

To fill Eovaldi’s spot on the active 25-man roster, Boston recalled left-hander Bobby Poyner from Triple-A Pawtucket ahead of Saturday night’s road game against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Mookie Betts and Mitch Moreland hit back-to-back homers for the go-ahead runs in the eighth inning and the struggling Boston Red Sox beat the MLB-best Tampa Bay Rays 6-4 on Friday night.
